Last year our season was phenomenal we won everything we
went to, Plano East 1st in Prelims and 1st in Finals, Area same thing, State
same story we became the 4A State Champions. All of that success was due to
LAST YEARS hard work that the band had put forth, the time and dedication that
everyone gave, and as well as the focus and determination was the best that
anyone could ask for. This year started off good. During summer band we got a
lot of things accomplished, people were working hard to get things right. Now
that everybody knows what to do people start to think " oh we won state
last year we don't have to try as hard." But there wrong, about 4 or 5
years ago the Poteet band got 2nd place at state, the following year the band
had a pretty good year. The year after (next state year) from what I was told,
the band didn’t try as hard because they were relying on the success they had
the pervious 2 years to get them what they wanted. It wasn't until mid-October
that they realized the success of the past would not get them anywhere, but it
was to late. They ended up getting 11th place at state that year. This year we
are doing the same thing. We had great success with Galactic Empires and then
last year without a doubt was amazing. What were starting to do is rely on that
success to get us what we want and where we want to be. As Mr. Coulson said,
"If you want people to stop talking about how good we were last year then
we have to out there and prove to them how much better we are this year."
The whole band has to work and put dedication into the process of making our
show as well as it can be. If you think "oh im only one person, everyone
else is doing good and getting it, it's okay if I don’t try as hard because im
only one person right?" Wrong, it only takes one person to mess up a
diagonal, a straight line, or to not be covering down. So I think everyone,
myself included, need to start showing more effort in every little thing, even
in fundamentals. Without good fundamentals, nothing will be good in the show. Seniors
yall know how it feels to have a season go down the drain after all the hard
work yall put into the show. So don't let yall's last one go down the drain.
Upperclassmen get on to the sophomores and freshman or any other people you see
doing things wrong (in a appropriate way and at an appropriate time). Freshman,
as Mr. Coulson said, "this stuff isn’t
new anymore." Yall have known how to do this for over a month now and there
is no reason why our fundamentals should be getting worse. It takes the whole
band to get the job done, not 50%, 75%, or even 90%. It takes, 100% focus,
effort, and dedication from every single band member not just the squad
leaders, or upperclassmen, but all of us. If we want to win Plano East for the
3rd consecutive time and especially if we want to win Duncanville this year,
then everyone has to step it up and get to work.
Don't let this season go down the drain. |
